The director of Campaign for the Arts (CFTA) is among those to express hope that Sir Chris Bryant’s replacement within the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) will take “bold” action to help bolster the creative industries.
Jack Gamble, actors’ union Equity’s head of policy and public affairs, Tom Peters, and creative industries’ union head Phillipa Childs of Bectu thanked Bryant for his service to the sector — and expressed cautious hope that Ian Murray will bring the same “level of engagement” to the job.
“The Arts Minister is our champion, not just within the DCMS but across government,” Gamble told Arts Professional. “This takes someone who not only understands the value of the sector and the challenges it faces, but is ambitious and tireless in driving change.”
“We know Ian Murray brings professional experience in events, hospitality, festivals and arts broadcasting,” he continued.
“He now has a crucial role in the health of UK culture, at a time when communities are losing venues, young people are missing out on arts education, and artists are struggling to make ends meet. Mr Murray, please be bold.”
