Autumn Budget: What to expect and what industry leaders are calling for

According to an explainer published by Campaign for the Arts, last year’s review meant “overall spending grew by 5.4% while the DCMS budget shrank by 6.2%.

“The gulf this year is much smaller, but DCMS is still being cut at almost the exact opposite rate at which overall spending is being boosted.”

Although the Spending Review has set out how much overall spending is planned for DCMS, the details of potential cuts and investments have not yet been revealed.

Director of Campaign for the Arts Jack Gamble told Arts Professional: “The autumn budget comes at a moment of real jeopardy for the UK’s arts sector, because of the significant threats to provision, access and the sustainability of arts careers across the UK.”

He said: “But it is also a real opportunity for the government to support the arts for everyone’s benefit.”

He sees the budget as an opportunity to support the arts through tax policy, given that last year’s budget saw Reeves commit to maintaining creative industries tax relief, which he thinks could be “further strengthened and expanded”.
