Tory ministers have done the arts a favour by showcasing our ‘divisive drivel’

The post goes into detail about the government’s proposed £1bn cut to DCMS, outlined by Kemi Badenoch and by the aforementioned shadow culture secretary at last week’s party conference. Unfortunately for the Conservatives, those in the cultural sector also pay attention to the detail, and the Campaign for the Arts’ Jack Gamble has taken a scalpel to the Conservatives’ sums.
Paul outlined how £700m of the proposed £1bn cut would come from “unallocated funding” and a large chunk of the remaining £300m from reducing arts funding.
However, Campaign for the Arts has gone through the government’s own figures to deduce that no unallocated, extra funding currently exists in the budgets and that cuts would more likely come from existing spending. The only additional funding earmarked to the department is £400m likely to be used for the UK to host the men’s Euros in 2028, and I doubt the football industry is going to let that one past the goalie.
