As the Arts Index survey from the National Campaign for the Arts, published in early June, points out, the past decade of cuts has made British organisations almost uniquely vulnerable to a prolonged period of closure. Where theatres in Germany, for instance, are effectively supported by the state – which has rushed in to bolster them post-coronavirus – in the UK, arts organisations have become increasingly reliant on earned income, as both public subsidy and business sponsorship have fallen.
