Why do politicians think the arts are dispensable?
Comment piece

The Campaign for the Arts has written to shadow culture secretary Rebecca Paul asking her to show her the maths, pointing out that her claim about an alleged £700m budget increase under Labour that the Conservatives would “unwind” to find the bulk of the billion is la la land. That means any cuts would have to come from current spending.
It would entail taking a wrecking ball to those Tory “crown jewels” such as the National Theatre, the Royal Ballet and Opera and the Royal Shakespeare Company, as well as numerous galleries, museums and orchestras. Do the Conservatives really want that? I doubt it.
