Samuel West on the evolution of auditions

Our Chair, actor and director Samuel West recently wrote an article for The Stage about casting, auditions and the advent of the self tape.

He was inspired to write the article after his experience directing The Watsons at Chichester Festival Theatre (which will be playing at the Menier Chocolate Factory in September 2019). During the auditions – packed in over 6 days – he met a whole wealth of brilliant actors, alongside Casting Director Charlotte Sutton. He noticed, however, that there has been a distinct shift in audition style and approach. The lightning rise in top-class television producing seems to be inspiring new ways of auditioning, which don’t necessarily benefit our theatres, or prepare actors for the stage.

Read the full article here, including Samuel’s tips to actors on approaching theatre auditions.
