CFTA responds to independent review of Arts Council England

The Campaign for the Arts has responded to the publication of an independent review of Arts Council England, led by Baroness Margaret Hodge DBE and supported by an Advisory Panel with expertise across the arts and cultural sector.

The Campaign for the Arts was a contributor to the review, and its research and analysis was cited in the published report and supporting data.

Jack Gamble, Director of the Campaign for the Arts, said:

“Baroness Hodge is clear that we need a strong, independent Arts Council more than ever – but she has also delivered a timely reminder to the government about the bleak financial position of artists and cultural organisations after years of funding cuts.

She is absolutely right to say that these cuts pose an ‘existential threat’, and that even ‘modest resource’ would unlock transformational benefits.

In their response to the review, ministers must not only consider the Arts Council’s crucial role in our national cultural life, but how to urgently restore the investment required to sustain it.”
